2010 PBA DRAFT: WHAT THEY NEED - ALASKA ACES

(Note: This is the second of ten installments)

Alaska didn’t have the depth… never had an outstanding rookie… and they had to let go of John Ferriols because… sigh… getting Samigue Eman shortened their cash flow.

And yet, Alaska was the only team to play in the finals of the two conferences last season where they won the Fiesta Cup.

So can Alaska please tell the other squads that just because they have many great players… don’t mean TEAM CHEMISTRY IS AUTOMATIC!!!

TEAM STATS:
PHILIPPINE CUP: TOURNAMENT FINALIST
FIESTA CUP: TOURNAMENT WINNER

DRAFT PICKS:
FIRST ROUND: TENTH
SECOND ROUND: TWENTIETH

CURRENT DEPTH CHART:
TOP 5: LA TENORIO, CYRUS BAGUIO, TONY DELA CRUZ, JOE DEVANCE, SONNY THOSS
RELIEF: TOPEX ROBINSON, LARRY FONACIER, MARK BORBORAN, REYNEL HUGNATAN, SAM EMAN

WHAT THEY NEED:
It shocks people how on paper, Alaska looks weak but on court, they are extremely dangerous. Blame this to Tim Cone’s wonderful system. Alaska has three options – 1) Find a SG to replace the retiring Jeff Cariaso; 2) Find a PG to complement with LA Tenorio; and 3) Find another big man just in case they need to get deep. They should probably get whatever is left in the draft that they deem PBA ready in the second round but on the first round, they could choose around RJ JAZUL, REY GUEVARRA, JAI REYES, BORGIE HERMIDA, or GIO CIRIACRUZ. Ciriacruz plays a lot like Bong Hawkins during his heyday and this guy is a blessed inside threat despite his height. Jazul is a combo guard that can play either guard positions. They want to snatch either JOHN SMITH or SHAWN WEINSTEIN in the draft but if other teams think they are good, I doubt if they are still available during this point. And if they are, just because they are foreign, doesn’t mean that they can do wonders in the PBA court (Mike Burtscher).

Tim Cone will probably rely less on the rookie that he will get this coming season… but at least the rookie will eventually find his way on his rotation… when he proves himself worthy.

Game over.
