2010 PBA DRAFT: WHAT THEY NEED - RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO PAINTERS

(Note: This is the seventh of ten installments)

Just when you thought they have returned to the tradition PBA’s Welcoat dubiously created, they prove critics otherwise. Rain or Shine was the only team to survive the Wildcard stages. At one point, their momentum was so high that teams facing them in the quarterfinals would find their selves worried.

And yet, they’ll always find their selves a win shy of the semifinals and they need to iron out the things that are pulling them out of the spotlight.

TEAM STATS:
PHILIPPINE CUP: QUARTERFINALS
FIESTA CUP: QUARTERFINALS

DRAFT PICKS:
FIRST ROUND: FIFTH
SECOND ROUND: FIFTEENTH

CURRENT DEPTH CHART:
TOP 5: SOLOMON MERCADO, RYAN ARANA, GABE NORWOOD, JAY-R REYES, MIKE HRABAK
RELIEF: TY TANG, JEFFREI CHAN, EDDIE LAURE, JERVY CRUZ, MARK TELAN

WHAT THEY NEED:
Size is still the issue. Jay-R Reyes is their only inside threat and he often gets the elbows, knees, and other things from his foes. Mike Hrabak scores on the outside while Jervy Cruz is a niche PF (he only gets the action when the opposing teams attempts to go small ball). At fifth, their main priority is to get a big man but with Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Nonoy Baclao, and Elmer Espiritu they may need to reconsider their priorities. One great player to claim is SEAN ANTHONY. He can play SF or PF if they want to play small ball, and he can move to the SG spot if they need to play big. PARI LLAGAS and FORD ARAO are other players to look at. They can also claim an additional shooting guard/small forward like JOHN WILSON, JOSH VANLANDINGHAM, JIMBO AQUINO, MARVIN HAYES, RJ JAZUL, MARVIN HAYES, and KHASIM MIRZA. There are other big men in the draft like MARK CANLAS and MEL GILE but none of them can give them the impact they need at this point.

Caloy Garcia has an eye for talent. Last year he picked Cruz and Marcy Arellano who were the perfect picks during those times.

Hopefully they’ll get the ingredients they need to at least give them a finals berth.

Game over.

  2. ROS lost the second round pick it gained from Coca-Cola through the Belasco-Isip trade to Alaska while it lost its natural pick by trading it for Mark Telan.
