Charlie Davao (1934 - 2010)

A couple of weeks ago, Philippine Showbiz bade farewell to Redford White.

Now it’s time for Charlie Davao, aged 75, to go to heaven.

Charlie Davao was dad to actor sons Ricky and Bing. He was also a notable bad guy in the 80’s and 90’s. It was brought to my attention that he was some awesome macho stud from the Sampaguita days. He had that arrogant diction as if he was “Spanish rich”. He was usually the evil haciendero, the sneaky businessman, the corrupt police chief, or the evil politician with a lot of goons and a collection of women, whose job is only to loiter the swimming pool to sun bathe or swim!

He would often scream at his bumbling henchmen to “kill at all costs”! He needs to be the syndicate boss because he is a miscast if he ranks as a lowly hitman or a small-time crook!

If I would do an All-time Pinoy Bad Guy list, he’ll probably be in the Top Ten.

He also played as a hard-nosed but a loving grandpa in some kid-oriented series and flicks which meant he can shed his gangsta image when the role needs to be done as such. .

I also remembered him as the fashion-designing gay daddy of Jennifer Sevilla in Bridesmaids… which is very odd role for him to play.

He was a bad guy to established action stars like Fernando Poe Jr., Ramon Revilla, Bong Revilla, Lito Lapid, Rudy Fernandez, Eddie Garcia, Jess Lapid Jr, Ace Vergel, Robin Padilla, Philip Salvador, and Joseph Estrada... to even 90’s pretty boy action stars like Ian Veneracion, Jeric Raval, Jestoni Alarcon, Zoren Legaspi, and others. He also notable appearance in international movies because he could speak English with relative ease. In the 2000’s he has mellowed on doing grandpa roles... with the occasional bad guy roles not totally out. He wasn’t really a part of the “primetime soap opera” brigade but I saw him do roles in ABS-CBN and GMA.

Charlie Davao’s acting chops seriously rubbed on Ricky Davao and Ricky made sure that he will use the gifts given to him and perhaps strengthening it more.

He will be missed.
