Annual Predator International 10-Ball Championship: The Results

I wasn’t supposed to give out a play by play. It just happened that I saw Efren Reyes playing against Rodney Morris in the Predator 10-Ball Championship semis. Reyes claimed a seat after a hard battle against compatriot Jeff de Luna. Morris booked a seat by outlasting Pinoy Warren Kiamco.

Throughout the game, Reyes has been missing open shots, making less than perfect safeties, and most importantly, ruining long balls. Fortunately Morris has an even bad day than Reyes. Morris has been missing shots and trying his best to pump up himself but to no avail.

When I saw that Reyes won, I went to the fridge to grab a bite. When I came back to turn off the TV, I saw the spiked streaks of Roberto Gomez laughing with the crowd. Roberto “Superman” Gomez came to the fray by winning against Carlo Biado in the quarterfinals. His semis opponent, Lee Van Corteza, won against Antonio Lining to claim a spot in the semis. In the end, Gomez defeated Corteza to book a spot in the finals. The commentators were quoted that Gomez' inability to win in the Philippines is because he plays "conscious" and unless he checks that, he'll be forever a bridesmaid in his native land.

Wait… they are now going to do the finals?

Why is Roberto Gomez called Superman if his hair looks like Son Gokou’s?

This prompted me to do a play-by-play.

GAME STARTS NOW!

RACK 1
Gomez starts off by pocketing the 1-ball after the break. Gomez pushed out the 2-ball to signal Reyes. Reyes returns it to Gomez and Superman nails an awesome safety. Reyes managed to hide the 2-ball and Gomez failed to hide the ball. Reyes again hides the ball and again Gomez gives him an opening. Reyes missed the 2-ball and Gomez connects but is caught with a 3-4 mash up. Gomez nails a safety but Reyes rises with a monstrous safety. Gomez hits the 2-ball but he left the ball visible for Reyes. Efren “Bata” Reyes wins the first rack.

Gomez breaks and hits the 10-ball… but that just means it will return to the game… and blocking his path to the 1-ball which he missed. Reyes failed to claim a convincing safety and Gomez pockets the 1-ball in the side pocket by bouncing it to the 9-ball. Afterwards, Gomez cruised for the win.

Gomez makes Bata pay with that miss by nailing the rest of the balls.

Gomez breaks and this is how we get the third dry break of the match. Reyes pushes out and Gomez accepts. It turned out to become a wicked safety. Reyes banked the ball to the side pocket and scores! Superman is unstoppable!

RACK 7
Fourth dry break for Gomez and fifth overall in the game in the match! Reyes failed to hide the ball but there is no clear shot in this table! Gomez manages to let Efren see the 1-ball but it is a seriously tricky table. Reyes hid the ball well enough to make Gomez miss. With ball in hand, Reyes wins the rack. He almost lost though… the 10-ball had a hard time going to the hole before trickling in.
SCORE: GOMEZ 5 – REYES 2

RACK 8
Reyes breaks and hits the 4-ball. Roberto Gomez never even made the table. Finally an easy rack to write!

RACK 12
At this time Reyes had only two unforced errors while Gomez has one. Gomez manages to land a ball but so did the cue ball. Ball in hand for Efren and it seems like Efren is frustrated with how the way he’s been playing. It’s probably because the final was held minutes after his semis match with Rodney Morris. Reyes missed the 6-ball and just nailed his third unforced error! But then, Gomez missed the 6-ball by a tip. Reyes makes him pay!
SCORE: GOMEZ 7 – REYES 5

RACK 13
Reyes nails two balls in the break. But then, Reyes missed the 1-ball! Fourth unforced by Reyes while Gomez has two! Gomez had an open lane but he was careless enough to place himself in a problem, setting Efren up to a 6-10 combo! NOT A GOOD IDEA FROM SUPERMAN!
SCORE: GOMEZ 7 – REYES 6

RACK 14
Reyes nets the 1-ball but has no clear shot on the 2-ball. Reyes pushes out and Gomez safely hides it. Reyes couldn’t hide but Gomez bungled the shot. Reyes missed a safety and Gomez managed to hit the 4-ball. However the 5-ball was hidden. A couple of safeties later, Reyes played a wicked 5-ball shot in the side pocket. The Magician is such a combo lord and he managed to even the series!
SCORE: GOMEZ 7 – REYES 7

RACK 15
Apparently Efren forgot to call a combo shot and it was such a late call so Gomez needs to forget about it. Fortunately for Gomez, Reyes had a dry break. Gomez calls for a push and Reyes craps an awesome safety. Efren’s magic is pumping because his wrongs are doing right! Efren missed a straight while Gomez missed a bank 2-ball. Finally Reyes nailed eight straight shots and finally he leads!

RACK 16
Reyes breaks and the 9-ball commits to the hole. Reyes is now pumped! Then all of a sudden, the cue ball is at the edge of the cue ball! Then he gets the safety and shouts “NICE TO BE WITH YOU”! Reyes showboating is never a pretty sight for his opponent! Reyes and Gomez is pumping safety after safety! Then Gomez nails another safety and shouts “YEAH”! Reyes blows up a shot and Gomez grabs the opportunity. Then Gomez misses the 6-ball… and Reyes bungles the chance. Reyes is MAD at the refs for looking for him to foul and Gomez seems to be getting on the ref’s head by questioning whether or not Reyes still has an extension. With an angry toothless guy, the Superman wins the rack to even it.
SCORE: REYES 8 – GOMEZ 8

RACK 17
The crowd is giving Roberto Gomez the reception of those German players. The crowd is definitely pro-Efren. Gomez nails a ball on the break and made Efren miss a long shot. Efren then gives Gomez a dose of speed control which gives him an opportunity after Gomez, bungled the attempt. Then Reyes made a safety. Reyes is pissed at Gomez. Gomez laughing is making Reyes angry! ANGRY!!! Especially with the bank shot Gomez didn’t call. ANGRY!!! Reyes is a point away from winning this thing!
SCORE: REYES 9 – GOMEZ 8

Then Reyes played safe but he failed to hide the ball properly. Gomez nailed the 2-ball and he has positioning on the 3-ball. Gomez just attempted a behind the back pin shot and scores it! Reyes BANKS THE BALL AND CONNECTS!!! Reyes has been living and dying with his long shot and Reyes SCORED the 9-ball! Gomez didn’t have to wait for Reyes to hit the 10-ball as he stands up and congratulates The Magician!
SCORE: REYES 10 – GOMEZ 9

WHAT A MATCH!

Roberto Gomez continues to be the bridesmaid and Reyes continues to be the darling of the Philippine billiard circuit! It was such an awesome win for Reyes because at this point it was evident that age has been catching up on the Magician. His long balls aren’t working as much but once he got pumped, he was dangerous. Just like the announcers said, he still has killer safeties and his short game is exceptional.

Hopefully Efren “Bata” Reyes will continue to reign in the world’s billiards stage for a few more years because he is awesome!

Game over!
