SYDMAN’S POWER
RANKINGS
2011 PBA COMMISSIONER’S CUP
AS OF APRIL 20, 2011
Wazap!
The Holy Week is a time for us to give
importance to our faith.
Let’s
do that.
Anyway,
here are the top players of the 2011 PBA
Commissioner’s Cup.
Only
the best as well as those who survived will be in the list. The last team
standing will have a lot of players on top while the best players from the
eliminated teams will continue to slide downwards.
The
more stats they accumulate, the more chances that they’ll stay up top.
Game
starts now.
THE TOP 20
20 JAY-R REYES
/ EXPRESS (formerly 18)
Stats: 7.8
points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.3 blocks
Either
he starts or comes off the bench, Reyes is one of the team’s top dogs. Sure, he
needs to work on his points... but definitely with him inside the court, he’s
definitely an asset.
19 SOL MERCADO
/ BOLTS (formerly 10)
Stats: 15.1
points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists
He is
still here because of his superior stats. Don’t expect him to last long in the
countdown though. I can definitely see Willie Miller or a TNT guy talking over
from his spot.
18 GABE
NORWOOD / ELASTO PAINTERS (formerly 39)
Stats: 9.9
points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists
Oh
look, numbers 18-20 are all former teammates. Finally, the Norwood of old was
back especially during the Ginebra series. Hopefully he’ll be in Yeng Guiao’s
good graces in the next conference.
17 MACMAC
CARDONA / BOLTS (formerly 9)
Stats: 15.1
points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.6 steals
Again,
because of his superior stats, he is still in the rankings. Fact is, as long as
he gets the touches as well as the production, Captain Hook can perhaps see a
2010-11 Mythical 10 selection in his resume.
16 RUDY
HATFIELD / KINGS (formerly 33)
Stats: 7.0
points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.0 steals
The
H-Bomb was insanely phenomenal in playoff time! Without the presence of Enrico
Villanueva and with the injury to Eric Menk, he is manning the other frontline
spot alongside Nate Brumfield. He doesn’t get the points but expect him in
rebounds.
15 RYAN REYES
/ TROPANG TEXTERS (formerly 29)
Stats: 8.3
points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.8 steals
Reyes
has been a steady performer to backstop Jimmy Alapag at the point or share
quarterbacking duties with Jason Castro. He has stepped up big in the semifinal
stages.
14 CYRUS
BAGUIO / ACES (formerly 20)
Stats: 11.8
points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.3 steals
If
only Skyrus was his dominant self offensively, the outcome would have been
different for Alaska. What happened to them against Air21 was both humbling and
embarrassing. Expect the Aces to bounce back in the next conference.
13 KELLY
WILLIAMS / TROPANG TEXTERS (formerly 14)
Stats: 9.6
points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.0 steals
It is
like the Philippine Cup all over again. Sure Talk N Text is dominating but
Machine Gun Kelly isn’t. At the biggest stage, the former MVP is now taking a
backseat to Ali Peek, Harvey Carey, and Ranidel de Ocampo. On positive note
even in a poor performance, he can still deliver in other categories.
12 SONNY THOSS
/ ACES (formerly 6)
Stats: 9.8
points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.3 steals
Again,
here is another player in here on borrowed time. In fairness to Thoss, The Boss
had a commendable performance as the team’s premiere frontcourt option. He will
continue this role for the Aces in the Governor’s Cup.
11 GARY DAVID
/ TIGERS (formerly 1)
Stats: 23.4
points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists
Even
if their conference ended almost a month ago, he is still checking in
prominently in the list. Rumors have been swirling that David is in line to be
traded to Petron (SMB). David works best with Bo Perasol mentoring him.
10 DONDON
HONTIVEROS / EXPRESS (formerly 26)
Stats: 14.4
points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.0 steals
It
still feels awkward that Hontiveros is wearing 24 instead of 7 but that’s the
life of the cager, right? The Cebuano Hotshot is a solid contributor for Air21
especially against Alaska. Hopefully he gets his groove back as Air21 fights
for dear life against Talk N Text.
9 CHRIS TIU /
SMART-GILAS (formerly 15)
Stats: 13.2
points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists
With
Mark Barroca on the injured list, all eyes are with Chris Tiu. He is the
rightful team captain of the squad. Even in defeat he is the team’s guiding
light. When everyone thinks he is a mere shooter, he excels in rebounds as well
as assists. Defintely, Tiu is PBA-ready.
8 RANIDEL DE
OCAMPO / TROPANG TEXTERS (formerly 28)
Stats: 13.4
points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists
His
rebounding is questionable at the moment but as far as providing offensive
support, he is a major factor. Whenever the Texters need a helping hand that
can bolster his way to an opposing team’s defense, he lends his dominating hand
to do such.
7 JIMMY ALAPAG
/ TROPANG TEXTERS (formerly 8)
Stats: 11.8
points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists
The
Mighty Mouse continues to be the league’s most efficient passer and he is
making his way against Josh Urbiztondo and Wynne Arboleda. Just like what LA
Tenorio said in a halftime feature, one of the hardest things for a point guard
to do is go head-to-head with Jimmy.
6 MARCIO
LASSITER / SMART-GILAS (formerly 12)
Stats: 14.1
points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.1 steals
Lassiter
has been struggling as of late. You know he can score but it seems the Ginebra
defense is getting the best of him. Smart-Gilas will need him more than ever
now that one more loss means they are out of the tourney.
5 JV CASIO /
SMART-GILAS (formerly 23)
Stats: 13.1
points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.2 assists
The
backcourt is the most important scoring arsenal of Team Pilipinas. This is why
JV Casio is important to their cause. Remember when he had a lot of 20-point
scoring nights? They will need his streak shooting more than ever.
4 DANNY SEIGLE
/ EXPRESS (formerly 7)
Stats: 14.2
points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.0 blocks
Whoever
thought it was a good idea for Seigle to be benched at San Miguel needs to have
his head checked. Because of the “refugees”, SMB21... or Air21 reached the
semis. Dynamite Danny needs to win their last three assignments against the
Texters to pull off a finals berth.
3 LA TENORIO /
ACES (formerly 3)
Stats: 17.3
points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.3 steals
If you
look at this, you’ll feel bad for The Lieutenant. He was a very close contender
for the Best Player plum. Well don’t because even in their exit – LA is a
serious contender for a particular plum – the MVP award. Yes, even with Jay
Washington, Arwind Santos, and Joe Devance, he still has a fighting chance.
2 JOE DEVANCE
/ ACES (formerly 4)
Stats: 14.6
points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.1 blocks
JDV is
another person who’ll fight for the MVP plum. All it takes for them is an
awesome Governor’s Cup to clinch the spot. Alaska is severely lucky when it
comes to the third conference and with (hopefully) LD Williams returning, they
will have a great chance to close their PBA season on a successful note.
1 MARK CAGUIOA
/ KINGS (formerly 13)
Stats: 16.6
points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists
Even
if Jong Uichico is still stubborn to not give this guy more minutes, baby, The
Spark is back in the PBA! If he continues to play well and if the Kings claim a
seat in the finals, expect Mark The Spark to win the Best Player of the
Conference title. His recent playoff performances are too noteworthy to not consider
when the race gains fruition. However... they must enter the finals and be
injury-free if he really wants to claim that spot.
THE OTHER 20:
21 WILLIE MILLER / KINGS (formerly
24)
22 LARRY RODRIGUEZ / ELASTO
PAINTERS (new entry)
23 MARC PINGRIS / LLAMADOS (formerly
11)
24 ALI PEEK / TROPANG TEXTERS (formerly
37)
25 RONALD TUBID / KINGS (formerly
31)
26 JAPETH AGUILAR / SMART-GILAS
(new entry)
27 BEAU BELGA / ELASTO PAINTERS
(new entry)
28 MIKE CORTEZ / KINGS (formerly
40)
29 ARWIND SANTOS / BEERMEN (formerly
19)
30 DOUG KRAMER / ELASTO
PAINTERS (formerly 30)
31 MARK BARROCA / SMART-GILAS (formerly
36)
32 LARRY FONACIER / TROPANG
TEXTERS (new entry)
33 HARVEY CAREY / TROPANG
TEXTERS (new entry)
34 PETER JUNE SIMON / LLAMADOS (formerly
16)
35 RABEH AL HUSSAINI / BEERMEN (formerly
17)
36 JOSH URBIZTONDO / EXPRESS (new
entry)
37 GABBY ESPINAS / BOLTS (formerly
25)
38 CHRIS LUTZ / SMART-GILAS (new
entry)
39 ALEX CABAGNOT / BEERMEN (formerly
35)
40 JAY WASHINGTON / BEERMEN (formerly
2)
Shocked?
Yes...
I know. Jay Washington didn’t play
the whole of April that’s why he’s hanging from the list checking out his
38-point drop. Most of the gainers and the new additions are from teams that
played in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Among those who got the boot are James Yap, Reynel Hugnatan, Asi Taulava,
Jonas Villanueva, Chris Ross, KG Canaleta, and Chico Lanete.
They
are either from B-Meg, Meralco, or Powerade.
Anyway,
check the list after the second game of the finals.
This
will be the last list and I will tell you who should be the Commish Cup’s Best Player of the Conference.
Game
over.
