Two
weeks in the season and the verdict is out. From registering 14-0 a couple of
seasons ago, the UE Red Warriors are
on their way to scoring a 0-14 season. UST
and La Salle are hotly contesting
the fourth and final spot of the Final Four where odds makers are singling out Ateneo, Adamson, and FEU as contenders to the crown.
As far
as individuals are concerned, here are the top players of the young Season 74 of the UAAP.
Game
starts now!
OUTSIDE
LOOKING IN:
20
ATENEO / NICO SALVA
12.0PPG – 6.5RPG – 1.3APG
Despite
their outstanding new hires, Salva is finding ways to make his self important.
19
ATENEO / KIRK LONG
10.0PPG – 2.8RPG – 4.3APG
Long
is playing his final year and just like the year before, he is showing his
leadership.
18 ADAMSON /
ALEX NUYLES
15.0PPG – 3.3RPG – 1.8APG
Nuyles
has been a big-time scoring sensation and some has been comparing him to Lordy
Tugade.
17
ADAMSON / ERIC CAMSON
11.5PPG – 6.8RPG – 1.0APG
Adamson
operates with seven or eight key players but in the shaded area, he is the
anchor.
16
UP / MIKE GAMBOA
10.3PPG – 3.3RPG – 4.0APG – 1.0SPG
The
former Ateneo Eaglet is back this season and he is fuelling UP’s drive to
improve their showing.
15
UST / JERIC TENG
12.3PPG – 4.0RPG – 3.0APG – 1.3SPG
Teng
had a great start in his UAAP season and it looks like Teng will be a key
figure in UST’s triumph.
14
UST / KEVIN FERRER
13.3PPG – 6.7RPG – 1.3APG
Last
season’s UAAP Juniors MVP is poised and ready to take away the spotlight from
the other rookie superstars.
13
UP / JOSE ANTON MANUEL
15.7PPG – 4.0RPG – 2.3APG – 1.0SPG
If
only UP had a better bench, they could be contenders in this tourney with the
way he is playing.
12 UST / KARIM
ABDUL
9.3PPG – 7.3RPG – 1.3APG – 1.3BPG
His
entry to the lineup solves UST’s lack of height. All of a sudden, the Tigers
are contenders for that 3 or 4 spot.
11
UST / CHRIS CAMUS
7.0PPG – 7.0RPG – 1.0APG – 1.7SPG
– 1.0BPG
With
Abdul in the lineup, Camus can concentrate in the other aspects of the game. He’s
basically a libero because he can do all stuffs to help UST.
THE
TOP TEN:
10
ATENEO / KIEFER RAVENA
12.5PPG – 4.3RPG – 2.5APG – 1.5SPG
The
rookie phenom had a forgettable debut but he managed to get back to his senses
and deliver what is expected from him. In many ways he is still raw but if this
is how he’ll start his UAAP career, I have to brace your selves on how he’ll
finish it.
9
FEU / RR GARCIA
16.3PPG – 3.3RPG – 2.8APG
Last
year’s MVP is still his fiery self but with the emergence of new blood made his
antics basic. He is however still a phenomenal scorer and until these kids learn
what it takes to win, no individual can stop him from becoming successful.
8
ATENEO / EMMAN MONFORT
8.0PPG – 4.8RPG – 4.3APG – 1.8SPG
Playing
in his final year in Ateneo, Monfort has improved in so many levels. He is a
proving to people that Ateneo is not just the Kiefer and Slaughter show. He is
churning out career-highs in rebounds, assists, and steals as part of the
Eagles.
7
FEU / ALDRECH RAMOS
11.3PPG – 8.0RPG – 1.0APG – 1.0SPG
The
former Smart-Gilas is also playing his final year. During his PBA guest stint,
he played well and with gusto. He is a league leader in rebounds and although
his scoring is down, he is still a threat. What he wants to do however is to bring
the championship to Morayta. It’s hard but doable.
6
UP / IFEANYI MBAH
7.3PPG – 8.7RPG – 1.0SPG – 2.3BPG
To
cure the loss of Magi Sison and Woody Co, State U enlisted this powerhouse to
backstop their chances. He might not be a scoring threat but he is a monster on
the inside. He currently leads the league in blocks.
5
UP / MIKE SILUNGAN
12.0PPG – 4.0RPG – 3.3APG – 1.7SPG
– 1.7BPG
The
Fil-Am had an explosive last season. Unfortunately UP failed to come to terms
with a winning season. Still his talent can’t be denied. Except for his scoring
that’s a bit down from last season, most of his stats are working for him.
4
ATENEO / GREG SLAUGHTER
15.8PPG – 7.8RPG – 1.8APG – 2.0BPG
The
former UV Lancer and the current Smart-Gilas slotman joined Ateneo to give the
Ateneans at least a season enriched with an extremely talents near seven-foot
slotman. Looking at his stats and Ateneo’s win-loss record, he has yet to
disappoint.
3
UST / JERIC FORTUNA
14.3PPG – 4.3RPG – 4.7 – 1.7SPG
The last
UST PG I saw that can play well in the majors was Dale Singson. And then there’s
this guy. He can score, can orchestrate, and knows how to make his self
important in crunch time. Hopefully UST can win at least against the top-tiers
of the season.
2
NU / BOBBY RAY PARKS
18.0PPG – 6.8RPG – 2.2APG – 1.6SPG
– 1.4BPG
He virtually
pleaded to get a shot to lead NU to top-tier status and now NU is a hot topic
in the UAAP circles because of him. He is an all-around player that can
basically do it all for his squad (he is also the league’s top scorer). But
fact is, his individual exploits can’t fuel the Bulldogs out of their slump and
this is one thing they need to address.
1
LA SALLE / LA REVILLA
17.0PPG – 5.5RPG – 3.8APG – 3.0SPG
This
entry may shock and in some ways frustrate you but he deserves being on the top
for all the right reasons. What DLSU lacked last year was a top veteran
presence and LA is giving this to the Archers. He ranks second after Parks in
scoring and ranks first in steals with a high of 3.0spg. The only thing bad
upon his upside is the current struggles of last season’s DLSU top PG Simon
Atkins.
Expect
a lot of changes in the coming weeks on who’s hot and who’s not in UAAP’s
Season 74.
Until
then...
Game
over!
