(This is the first of ten
articles called What They Need. Last
year, I made a version where we called out a PBA team’s roster and pick out the
slots they need to shore up. Most of these deficiencies are addressed via the
draft.)
Aside from
Talk N Text, Ginebra is the only
team to make all of the season’s semi-final action. Their most successful
season is the Commissioner’s Cup
where they almost trounced the Tropang
Texters. On paper, Ginebra has a lot of players that were stars in some
point of their careers. With that said, check out the top 5 Kings so we can
identify the flaws in their system.

WHAT
THEY NEED:
CENTERS: With Enrico Villanueva, Billy Mamaril, Yancy de Ocampo, and Eric Menk in their payroll, size
shouldn’t be an issue. However, with injuries and age battling their bigs, they
need new blood more than ever. Unfortunately for the Kings, resorting to
conduits isn’t as one-sided as it was two seasons ago. If they want to claim a
noteworthy big, they must give up a noteworthy random player.
This
is the part that should scare the Kings.
FORWARDS: The Kings are too shallow in
their size and their forwards aren’t that big to begin with. Willy Wilson is the team’s able
supplement for Rudy Hatfield but he’s
under 6’4. Hatfield chose not to renew his contract and is now with his family
in the States. JC Intal and Nino Canaleta are bigger than W. Wilson
but they aren’t low post threats. The size issue proved to be a serious problem
especially when the Commish decided to have small imports for the Commissioner’s
and the Governor’s Cup.
GUARDS: Just like what I’ve been
telling people for a bunch of seasons now, this is not an issue for the Kings.
HOWEVER with the constant injuries to Mike
Cortez and Jayjay Helterbrand, Mark
Caguioa and Ronald Tubid are the
only safe bets in their run and gun backcourt system. The good news for the
Kings is that their new blood John
Wilson, Jimbo Aquino, and Rob
Labagala can be developed. They are basically the reason why Willie Miller got shipped out from the
lineup.
WHO
SHOULD THEY PICK?
I
think they need to choose the best player left in the draft. Actually, maybe it’s
time for them to shore up on their frontline if they can grab the likes of Jason Ballesteros, Magi Sison, Ken Acibar, Calvin
Abueva, or Ronald Pascual then
by all means grab them. Except for Ballesteros though, Ginebra is free to
search for size through free agency and trades. After all, Abueva and Pascual
couldn’t be that helpful to bolster their roster.
If a
Smart-Gilas player is still available in the draft, Ginebra should take him.
Game
over!
