The Final Four matches... in a span of days...
will commence. We know the matches and certainly we know the teams that will
provide maximum entertainment en route to the finals but do we really who
brought what in the elimination round?
I
mean... who will be the 2011 UAAP MVP?
Check
this out because game... starts now!
20
UE RED WARRIORS / PAUL ZAMAR
12.2PPG
– 3.1RPG – 2.1APG
It’s
hard to graduate like this. At least Zamar was seen by all as the team’s leader
and lone bright spot. Also as consolation... it’s clear that Ken Acibar SHOULD
have stayed in school (this would have been his final year but Acibar ditch the
UAAP to get drafted).
19
DLSU GREEN ARCHERS / NORBERT TORRES
7.9PPG
– 5.8RPG – 1.0APG – 1.6BPG
This
spot should have been reserved to Simon Atkins and Alvin Villanueva but since
they have done nothing to make the Archers formidable despite being seniors,
the guy that led the team in boards and swats despite playing in his first
season with the Archers should get the nod.
18
DLSU GREEN ARCHERS / LA REVILLA
8.7PPG
– 4.5RPG – 3.6APG – 1.6SPG
The
spitfirish LA Revilla returned to the UAAP like a house on fire. However, as
the season progressed, he lost steam. He was contented in playmaking rather
than scoring – which was the major problem the Green Archers faced this season.
17
FEU TAMARAWS / TERRENCE ROMEO
9.9PPG
– 4.7RPG – 2.9APG
Just
like in his rookie season, Romeo a solid job playing offensive backup for RR
Garcia and Aldrech Ramos. Ever since he acquired the starting point job from
the graduating Jens Knuttel, he has been on a roll.
16
UP FIGHTING MAROONS / MIKE SILUNGAN
11.4PPG
– 5.2RPG – 3.7APG – 1.0SPG – 0.9BPG
Critics
thought the Maroons showed a lot of promise to even matter this season but lo
and behold they ended up tied with UE at the last place. This is more
disappointing for the Maroons because unlike the Warriors, UP have a decent
team led by the all-around Silungan.
15
ADAMSON SOARING FALCONS / LESTER ALVAREZ
9.9PPG
– 1.9RPG – 3.0APG – 1.6SPG
If
there is one X-factor to make the Falcons invincible in the next round, it has
to be his playmaking skills. Alvarez needs to mesh his people to do well and he
has the tools to succeed at it.
14
UST GROWLING TIGERS / JERIC TENG
14.0PPG
– 4.4RPG – 2.3APG – 0.8SPG
He is
the Tigers’ most valuable scorer. He leads the team in points and he can also
defend and orchestrate at times. Whenever he’s on fire, he gives out fuel to
also ignite his teammates.
13
UST GROWLING TIGERS / CHRIS CAMUS
6.9PPG
– 7.6RPG – 1.5APG – 1.1SPG – 1.5BPG
His
offense might have escaped him this season, it’s his other intangibles to make
him severely important to the Tigers’ cause. He is one of those players that
don’t need to score to elicit impact.
12
UST GROWLING TIGERS / JERIC FORTUNA
13.6PPG
– 4.0RPG – 3.2APG – 1.3SPG
He has
been ably directing traffic for UST’s cause and has been a thorn to his
opponents. Make no mistake that Fortuna will be marked man when they face
Ateneo in the Final Four!
11
ADAMSON SOARING FALCONS / ERIC CAMSON
11.3PPG
– 7.8RPG
Eric
Camson showed that he is for real by duplicating his impressive 2010 UAAP
season. With Falcons a win away from reaching the finals, All eyes are locked
on how Camson, will do in the Final Four.
10
NU BULLDOGS / EMMANUEL MBE
11.2PPG
– 9.4RPG – 1.6BPG
He
started out weak – with the thought that Bobby Ray’s presence alone can
catapult the Bulldogs to the Final Four. But it was not meant to be and in
order to claim a respectable showing, Mbe needed to reclaim his old form.
Imagine a mature version of Parks and Mbe in the 2012 UAAP Season? Scary.
9
ATENEO BLUE EAGLES / EMMAN MONFORT
7.1PPG
– 4.1RPG – 4.2APG – 1.6SPG
Playing
in his last year (?), Emman Monfort wants to go out with a bang. He is Ateneo’s
chief reliever and while he may not get the points but he’ll grab the edge in
intelligent decision-making.
8
FEU TAMARAWS / RR GARCIA
16.4PPG
– 3.8RPG – 2.7APG – 0.9SPG
I
doubt if he’ll get the MVP trophy for the second straight year but he is still
a valuable member of the Tamaraw squad nonetheless. He ably cured the Tams’
longing for the injured JR Cawaling with his impressive scoring – which is
second overall in this season.
7
ATENEO BLUE EAGLES / NICO SALVA
12.8PPG
– 6.0RPG – 1.8APG
Nico
Salva is still a revered frontliner for the Blue Eagles, despite the entry of
Ravena and Slaughter. If they hope to repeat the feat they had last year,
Norman Black must get significant contributions from the guy.
6
ADAMSON SOARING FALCONS / ALEX NUYLES
15.2PPG
– 5.5RPG – 3.3APG – 0.9SPG
I was
hesitant at the start of the season to point this out but with the way he’s
leading Adamson, I won’t get shocked if Nuyles wins the MVP award. While I
think his chances are slim, he made a superhuman effort in convincing the
critics that the Falcons will soar this season.
5
ATENEO BLUE EAGLES / KIEFER RAVENA
13.1PPG
– 4.2RPG – 3.1APG – 1.5SPG
His
rookie year is an indication that Kiefer Ravena is anything but an overhyped
media baby. It is scary to find out that Ravena is still in his first year because
with the skills he displayed, there is nothing novice about it. The
sought-after cager is also seen by many as the next important basketball player
in the pro circuit.
4
FEU TAMARAWS / ALDRECH RAMOS
11.8PPG
– 9.4RPG – 1.5APG – 1.2BPG
Playing
in his last year, the Smart-Gilas star is bent to give the Tamaraws a
championship. No question, with the way he is playing, a pro career is bound to
embrace him in the future. While I would have loved it if Ramos upped his
scoring, it’s a clear case that he’ll end his playing career in FEU awesomely
regardless of whether or not they win this year’s UAAP title.
3
UST GROWLING TIGERS / KARIM ABDUL
12.1PPG
– 11.5RPG – 1.4APG – 1.0SPG – 1.5BPG
Karim
Abdul is just what the doctor ordered for the Tigers. Last year, the Tigers
were too small to play the other squads and in some ways, UST needs an elite
giant to free up their wingers. If you check out UST’s history, finals appearances
run rampant whenever guys like Dennis Espino, Chris Cantonjos, Marvin
Ortiguerra, and Jervy Cruz are in the picture and yes... Abdul is in their
mold.
2
NU BULLDOGS / BOBBY RAY PARKS
20PPG
– 6.5RPG – 2.9APG – 1.1SPG – 1.1BPG
He almost
watched the season unfold on the sidelines. With one spirited defense however,
he was approved to play. It’s damn shame for the seven other teams because they
experienced why NU is bent on claiming the son of the legendary Bobby Parks. He
plays the power forward/center position for the Bulldogs but he plays like a
shooting guard. I know Parks is the sure choice for the Top Rookie award but
given NU’s record, it’s hard for the UAAP board to give him the MVP spot.
1
ATENEO BLUE EAGLES / GREG SLAUGHTER
13.3PPG
– 9.4RPG – 1.4APG – 1.9BPG
A
monster... he’s a monster I tell you! As if Ateneo isn’t dangerous enough, those
evil Eagles bring him from Lancer-land to even make the Eagles a tad more
vicious. Whatever thing this guy swallowed when he was young and made him this
powerful should be given to every kid in the nation. “Frankensteined” by no
less than the best player in PBA history Ramon Fernandez, is an effective player
with or without the ball and he is an intimidating factor on both offense and
defense. He is certainly a favorite to win the award.
MVP PREDICTION: Smart money tells me that I
should go with a Smart-Gilas guy. While Ramos is in his final year and has
given the Tamaraws solid numbers, I can’t discount the fact that Greg Slaughter
led the Eagles to an amazing 13-1 finish. So I think I’m going to give this to
Slaughter.
If
only Parks led NU to a final four finish, this would have been easily his award
as well although I don’t know if the board is looking for him to get the plum.
I’m just saying that the MVP winner should come from the winning squad.
The
Final Four preview in a couple of days.
Game
over!
