FOUR PBA IMPORTS IN BIG3 SEASON THREE

So the Big3 Season 3 Draft happened.

And I must say, there are a lot of familiar faces there.

Greg Oden for one should have been an NBA All-Star. Royce White, the dude who once had fear of planes, became the draft’s top pick.

But allow me to distance myself on the former NBA players because here, I want to check out the draftees that played in the PBA.

Two of which, are selected in the first round.

The FOURTH PICK OVERALL | KILLER THREES | JOSH POWELL

The former LA Laker won two championships in the NBA. When the Barangay Ginebra Kings had a 2-4 record and were desperate for wins, Josh Powell flew in to bid previous import, Leon Rodgers, adieu. Turns out, Powell’s Ginebra tenure was short-lived because the Houston Rockets offered him a contract. Powell left Ginebra with a 3-5 record and was subsequently replaced by long-time PBA reinforcement, Gabe Freeman.

The FIFTH PICK OVERALL | BALL HOGS | WILL MCDONALD

It’s funny how serious Will McDonald was when Michael Rapaport interviewed him. It feels as if he had a bad experience playing basketball before?

\

Well, Will McDonald played for the Petron Blaze Boosters in the 2012 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. And yeah, he was the dude that Mick Pennisi antagonized in the “delayed flop” viral video. I think he learned a lot from the moment because getting baited by the “Dirtiest Name in Philippine Basketball” meant that Petron lost their import for the entirety of the game. Losing that game caused Petron to miss out on the quarterfinals. And McDonald’s two-game stint meant that Petron was better off sticking with Nick Fazekas, who is currently the naturalized player of Japan.

In all, there are four former PBA players in the upcoming BIG3 season with 3s Company’s team captain DerMarr Johnson (once played for Barako Bull) selecting former Meralco Bolt Andre Emmett. Johnson and Emmett are also joined by former Detroit Piston Jason Maxiell, who would have suited up for Tropang TNT in 2016 had not for height restrictions.

In some ways, I want WNBA to have this kind of appeal. 3X3 Basketball is making waves as a new variation of basketball and the best example for this is the selection of FIBA 3X3 MVP Dusan Bulut. The Serbian basketball star is arguably the greatest international player to play in FIBA with five gold medals, three tour wins, and four individual top player honors.

And yeah, in some ways, perhaps we can also have a BIG3 guy in the near future with Kobe Paras getting more acclaim as a 3X3 guy or if Terrence Romeo wants to razzle-dazzle in a bigger stage.
