So here’s how this works.
The WPA World 9-Ball Championship debuted in 1990 with Earl
Strickland as the inaugural winner. In 1999, there were two events that happened
– the WPA-sanctioned championship which was won by Nick Varner and the
Matchroom Sport-produced championship held in Cardiff, Wales that was won by
Efren “Bata” Reyes.
WPA has the direction while Matchroom Sport had the moolah.
They were bound to merge.
Anyway, I will just recognize the tournament champions of
the old event.
Players will be judged on the championships, the various
times they advanced to the knockout stages, and how far they went before they
lost to the eventual champion.
Anyway if you’re interested or you like what you see, share
it with your friends.
New posts will arrive from Sunday to Friday at around 3pm.
The game starts now.

Oliver Ortmann goes by the name of The Machine and up to
this day, he is known as one of the best European players of all-time. However
after winning the 1995 WPA Championship against American Dallas West in Taiwan,
Ortmann has yet to win a title. The highest place Ortmann got is two Sweet
Sixteens in 2000 and 2002. Still, from 1999 to 2014, Ortmann has missed the
knockout stages just once.

It took Appleton a decade to make his presence known in
9-Ball. So when Dynamite defeated Li He-Wen to win the championship in 2012, it
was bliss for the awesomely animated cue artist. 10-Ball, on the other hand, is a
different story – with the Englishman becoming the inaugural winner of the
event in 2008 when he defeated Wu Jia-Qing in Pasay City, Philippines.
23 | COREY DEUEL | USA

The two-time Mosconi Cup MVP and two-Mosconi Cup winner is a
pool legend with a slew of awards and earnings to show. I guess this is why his
nickname is Cash Money. With that said, Corey Deuel has yet to win the
championship despite being an inaugural participant. The farthest he got in the
tourney was in 2000 when Deuel lost to eventual champ Chao Fong-Pang.
22 | MARCUS CHAMAT | SWEDEN

Short but superb. Dubbed Napoleon due to the previous
sentence, Marcus Chamat had a constant claim on the Round of 64 for the first
ten years of the tournament. Unfortunately for the Swede, the former Mosconi
Cup winner never reached the WPA final. The farthest Chamat got was in 2004 –
when he lost to Chang Pei-Wei in the semifinal round.
21 | NICK VAN DEN BERG | THE

From 2001 to 2014, this Dutch cue master is a fixture of the
World 9-Ball knockout stages. But while sure, he won two European pool titles
in 2009 and 2011, Van Den Berg has never the World 9-Ball Championship. Thrice
he reached the quarterfinal round in 2005, 2012, and 2013 but sadly encountered
roadblocks in the forms of Rodney Morris in 2005, Ralf Souquet in 2012, and
Antonio Gabica in 2013.
