7 SHITTY THINGS ABOUT THE GILAS PILIPINAS VERSUS ITALY GAME | 2019 FIBA WORLD CUP

FROM THE FIBA WEBSITE

I HAVE TO RANT.

ANDRAY BLATCHE… YOU ARE A FEEDER.

YOU TOO, YENG GUIAO.

I think you two are going to bounce back in the next game though. Andray Blatche is the type of player that would have a monstrous bounce back after a humiliating game and despite the near-double digit turnovers, he was still able to get his scoring and rebounding objectives. Also, Yeng Guiao managed to have a respectable second half from his squad. He knew the players that clicked and he tried to bank on the guys as much as possible.

AND YEAH, I think they know that they don’t want to have THIS KIND of legacy in such a bigstage.

NUMBER ONEI can’t believe how uninspired was the first half. I like Chot Reyes as Gilas Pilipinas coach but even a college coach would sue for time when an opposing team breaks out ten unopposed shots. Gilas should have sued for time when the lead was just 12 to 4. I once coached an inter-department team and even if I am more of just a pretty face in the sidelines, I would call for a timeout to stop a rampaging team’s momentum.

NUMBER TWO | Also, I am going to sit the players I don’t see as vital in that stage. Also, Gilas should have sent June Mar Fajardo and Kiefer Ravena right from the get-go. Mark Barroca was letting Andray Blatche run the show and as the point guard… why would you?

NUMBER THREE | And yeah. The Andray Blatche point guard scenario has been Gilas Pilipinas’ problem since the Chot Reyes days. When he plays outside, they need a guy like June Mar in the middle to hunt for offensive boards. Guiao should have buried him on the bench when he tried to hit weak-ass passes.

NUMBER FOUR | I WOULD HAVE WANTED BEAU BELGA ON THIS TEAM. If there is one player that could have set this team in the right direction, it is this guy. If none of the guards would step and try their best Jayson Castro or Jimmy Alapag impersonation, the Big Beau is the next viable fit. People laugh at the sight of this Yeng Guiao crony but his FIBA Qualifier numbers are faaaaaarrrr better than half of the players that made the squad (although this stat is kind of flawed considering Robert Bolick and CJ Perez are main roster newbies).

NUMBER FIVE | AND SPEAKING OF THE TWO UPSTARTS… PLAY THESE GUYS LIKE HELL. If you miss the services of Calvin Abueva, Jayson Castro and Terrence Romeo, then Bolick and Perez alongside Kiefer Ravena are the best replacements. Most especially CJ Perez who never looked lost despite the presence of the Italian NBA vets.

NUMBER SIX | AND HAVE A FREAKING OFFENSIVE PLAY THAT WORKS! The first quarter is the shittiest start of any Gilas squad of recent memory. In 2014, Gilas lost all but one game but the margin was lower than ten. Blatche playing far from the basket and passing duds to his teammates is a no-no. There should also be proper ball movement because Gilas threw errant triple bombs that weren’t properly set up. BALL MOVEMENT IS THE KEY!!!

NUMBER SEVEN | And here’s a cute stat – for every one three-point attempt… is a turnover. So in 23 turnovers, Gilas only made just three triples. THAT IS NOT A CUTE STAT!

If you want a play that could work – how about the dribble-drive?

Anyway, I hate comparing Yeng Guiao with Chot Reyes but as drama-centric as Chot was, he is the one that sent us to where we are now. Guiao actually had a so-so win-loss record with the pinnacle being the loss to lowly Kazakhstan that nearly pushed the team out of the World Cup.

INSTEAD OF GOING ZEN, MAYBE HE NEEDS TO SCREAM AND MOUTH FOUL LINES ON HIS PLAYERS? I think the departure of Castro and Scottie Thompson, as
well as the invite snub of Ray Parks, sent CYG to his current Zen mode. I guess this is cool and all but in a time when you need to snap out of a bind, Yeng Guiao needs to also have his mind on the right track.

THIS IS WAR PEOPLE! WE CAN’T HAVE OUR SOLDIERS ZONING OUT WHEN THERE’S A BATTLE TAKING PLACE!!!

END
